Who it is for
Anyone from four upwards who wants to move to music they recognise. Younger children work on coordination, counting and confidence in front of a room. Older students go further into technique, control and the kind of performance quality that reads from the back of a theatre.
You do not need any previous training. Roughly half the students in a beginner class have never danced before, and the class is taught with that in mind.
What happens in a class
- Warm-up and conditioning Ten minutes of mobility and strength work so bodies are ready and injuries stay rare.
- Technique across the floor Turns, jumps, isolations and travelling steps, broken down and repeated until they land.
- Routine of the term A piece built up week by week, often the one they will perform at the Christmas show.
- Performance practice Running it full out, in groups, in front of each other. This is where the nerves go.
Where it can lead
Students who want to be assessed can take graded examinations and medals through our awarding bodies. Some students are invited into one of the three performing troupes. Everyone, whatever their level, gets a place in the annual show.
